ROH recommissions Benjamin and Crimp to follow Written on Skin

- 14 June 2013

The Royal Opera House has commissioned a second new opera from George Benjamin and Martin Crimp following the success of Written on Skin, which was a co-commission with the Aix-en-Provence festival, Netherlands Opera, the Toulouse Théâtre du Capitole and Maggio Musicale, Florence.

Kasper Holten, director of opera, said: ‘It is hard to imagine a better match between a composer and a writer than Benjamin and Crimp, we have enjoyed doing Written on Skin immensely and we are extremely proud that they will be writing a new piece for Covent Garden.’

‘As a part of our focus on new commissions on all scales over the next years, this will obviously be a key project.’

Covent Garden is the principal commissioner but discussions are taking place to bring further companies on board.

‘We expect this commission will be done in partnership with other opera companies, and interest has already been expressed from opera companies in several countries,’ Holten said, ‘but the world premiere will take place at Covent Garden.’

The new commission slots into a programme of new music until 2020, as announced earlier this year.

Written on Skin continues touring since its world premiere at Aix in summer 2012, having run at Covent Garden in March and opening this evening at Theater an der Wien, Vienna. Full productions between now and May 2015 will take place at Bavarian State Opera, the Paris Autumn Festival, Stadttheater Bonn and St Gallen, Switzerland.

Radio 3 broadcasts a recorded performance from Covent Garden on 22 June, 6pm; and BBC Four will broadcast the production on 28 June, 7.30pm.
