‘Next generation of leading development directors’ selected for national fellowship programme

The first 11 graduates have been selected for the Arts Fundraising and Philanthropy Consortium’s arts fundraising fellowship, which they will begin this month in work placements across England.

The programme aims to foster ‘the next generation of leading development directors skilled with the vision, entrepreneurial expertise and ingenuity to make a significant difference to the arts fundraising landscape’.

The fellows (listed below) will work in their host organisations, where they will be mentored by the development director, for 75% of their time on the programme. They will also spend time working with a smaller arts group and attend the National Arts Fundraising School in November this year.

Music organisations hosting fellows include Opera North, Sage Gateshead, Royal Northern College of Music, Barbican, Roundhouse and Sadler’s Wells.

The programme has been created by development and fundraising enterprise Cause4 with Opera North and the University of Leeds’ DARE Fundraising Academy, and will initially run for three years.

Sir Peter Bazalgette, chair of Arts Council England, said: ‘The Arts Council recognises that arts and cultural organisations need help to get better at making the case for the arts as a cause worth giving to; and to get better at asking. Part of that includes making sure that the sector has the skills to do this.

‘I met many of the applicants and they’re talented, entrepreneurial fellows who will make a dynamic contribution to the sector as they progress in their careers. I’m delighted to welcome them to this innovative programme.’

Michelle Wright, programme director of the Arts Fundraising and Philanthropy Programme for Cause4, said: ‘The Arts Fundraising Fellowship Programme responds to the shortage of skilled arts fundraisers at a time when many organisations have seen significant cuts and need to be flexible and entrepreneurial in the pursuit of alternative income sources.

‘We are aiming to support these 11 fellows to help redefine the relationships between private and public sector funding, leveraging their passion, commitment and know-how to help maximise alternative income streams. We hope, in time, that they become future leaders in this vital field of income generation.’

Richard Mantle, chair of the Arts Fundraising and Philanthropy Programme and general director of Opera North, said: ‘This first cohort of fellows will benefit from a pioneering, practice-based career development programme, supported by leaders in the sector. I am delighted that this initiative seeks to raise the status of this critical profession.’

Arts Fundraising Fellows – 2013

  • Naomi Allen, fellow for Free Word, is based in London and received an MA in Visual Anthropology in 2012 from Goldsmiths College, University of London after spending two years as an Outreach Manager for IndiaUnheard, based in Goa.
  • Tom Bevan, fellow for the Royal Northern College of Music, is based in Manchester and has recently graduated with first class honours in his Interactive Arts BA from Manchester Metropolitan University whilst also working as a digital Inclusion Assistant at Bury Library.
  • Adam Cooper, fellow for Sage Gateshead, is based in Newcastle and is has just completed an MA in Business Administration at Durham Business School.  He recently completed an Internship with Sage Gateshead.
  • Stephanie Graham, fellow for the Barbican, lives in Surrey and graduated from Manchester School of Art in 2010 with a BA in Fine Art.  Over the past three years Stephanie has been working within the Investment team at Arts Council England.
  • Sarah Johnston, fellow for Opera North, is based in Liverpool where she obtained her MA in Cultural History from the University of Liverpool in 2009.  Since 2012 Sarah has been working at the Milap Festival Trust as their Development Officer.
  • Sandie Mattioli, fellow for the Whitechapel Gallery, is based in London and graduated with an MA in Science, Environmental Design and Engineering from University College London.   After a successful career as a journalist and researcher, Alexandra decided to pursue a career in the arts and has undertaken a wide range of voluntary work at organisations including the Camden Arts Centre and the Abbey Community Centre.
  • Emma Pickering, fellow for Sadler’s Wells, currently lives in Oldham and graduated from Durham University in 2011 with a BA in Human Geography.  Emma has recently completed an Arts Development Internship for the Forestry Commission, based at Grizedale Forest, Cumbria.
  • Jill Richens, fellow for a New Direction, is based in London and obtained her BA in Geography from University College London.  Jill has been working as a Donor Support Officer at Artsmarketing Services Inc.
  • Sarah Ruff, fellow for Dance UK, is based in London and in 2011 obtained an MA in Creative and Cultural Entrepreneurship from Goldsmiths College, University of London. From March to June 2013, Sarah recently participated in a transnational professional development programme funded by the European Union, including a work placement at Escuela De Arte Dionisio Ortiz, Córdoba.
  • Dana Segal, fellow for The Roundhouse, lives in Essex and obtained in 2012 her BA in Modern Drama Studies from Brunel University.   Dana has undertaken project work at the Roundhouse, first as a Youth Engagement Officer, and more recently as an Individual Giving Administrator.
  • Bex Shindler, fellow for Tate Liverpool, is based in Leeds and obtained her BA in Fine Arts from Lancaster University in 2010, which she followed with a course in Exploring Arts for Social Change at the Simon Fraser University in Vancouver.   For the past two years Bex has been working within Opera North’s Development team.
