Canadian baritone Gerald Finley will be climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in August to raise money for Help Musicians UK.

Walking with his two sons, Finley aims to raise £10,000 for the musicians’ charity.

‘It seemed an appropriate moment and a natural choice to take on Kilimanjaro,’ he said, ‘acknowledging the help of and thanking those colleagues who have aided my musical treks.

‘I know that Help Musicians UK have been key in supporting those who find themselves with challenges. We musicians don’t often qualify for straightforward assistance; Help Musicians UK can be there in the tough times. Please help them make a difference to those whose talents need support in difficult circumstances. Give me a tune/song/aria to sing while climbing, to keep the breathing and rhythm strong!’

Finley has set up a JustGiving page for supporters at justgiving.com/geraldfinley.

  • Graham Sheffield last month became chairman of Help Musicians UK, taking over from Richard Lyttelton. He will lead the charity ‘into the next phase of our development as Help Musicians UK, which will see us reach out to all of the 70,000 musicians in the UK,’ said a statement.
