Musicians in Queen’s birthday honours list include knighthood for András Schiff

Several musicians feature in the Queen’s birthday honours list, announced on 13 June.

Pianist András Schiff received a knighthood, and soprano Susan Bullock and ENO artistic director John Berry received CBEs.

Boosey & Hawkes managing director Janis Susskind (right) received an OBE, describing the honour as ‘a bolt from the blue’, and thanking ‘the colleagues who contributed to our collective achievements and the composers who continue to write music that will stand the test of time’.

Victoria Sharp, founder of music education and performance charity London Music Masters and chairman of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, also received an OBE, as did tabla player Talvin Singh.

Marion Friend, retiring director of Junior Trinity, received an MBE, as did Robert Rattray and Martin Campbell-White, founding joint chief executives of Askonas Holt; Martin Binks, conductor of Leeds Symphony Orchestra and artistic director of West Riding Opera; and conductor Andrew Penny.

Paul Parkinson, music adviser of the British Council, received an MBE in recognition of a career at the organisation lasting nearly 25 years. Since 1990 he has promoted UK music in regions including Europe, the Far East, South Asia and the Americas.

John and Noretta Conci-Leech, founders of the Keyboard Charitable Trust, also each received an MBE.
