Here’s a baffling question for a pub quiz. What do the following places have in common: Barnsley, Consett, Oldham, Wakefield, Middlesbrough, Chesterfield, and Hexham? Answer: Opera. Together with Stamford in Lincolnshire and Huddersfield, these were the towns visited on the second tour by one of the most enterprising current opera projects in Britain – Young Opera Venture. The company brought its production of The Magic Flute to modest-sized theatres in all these towns in September and October of this year, and, to judge by audience responses, tapped into an appetite for opera, and a curiosity about it.
