With their penchant for competitions and what can seem like a military approach to music-making, brass bands are not always thought of as bastions of high art. So how is it that Foden’s Band, one of the UK’s leading brass bands, is responsible for commissioning some of the most interesting new music being written today? The answer is a ground-breaking scheme involving the first ever resident composer to be attached to the band.
