Contrary to liturgical tradition, Edward Greenfield begins his memoir, Portrait Gallery: A Life in Classical Music (Elliott & Thompson, £16.99), with a Credo. There is before that a dedication slyly pinched from Elgar’s Enigma Variations – ‘To my friends pictured within’ – but that Credo is a cameo of the man responsible for over half a century of music criticism.
