In his book Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell suggested that it took a minimum of 10,000 hours of practice to become a professional of any discipline. For many musicians this just represents the tip of the iceberg to the lifelong commitment needed to follow a career in the music industry. Professional musicians are highly trained and skilled individuals who have already invested hugely both in time and money in their education and in honing their instrumental skills.
