It is ‘quite ironic, in a way,’ says Sir Peter Bazalgette at the coincidence of English National Opera, of which he has just given up the chairmanship, declaring its biggest deficit in recent times as he becomes chair of Arts Council England. ‘It was a poor, tough, difficult year in which we won all the opera awards but had a poor box office.’
