Think about summer opera and what comes to mind? A second mortgage is obviously high on the list: the hundred-quid ticket is an impossible dream these days at the likes of Glyndebourne and Garsington, and even the rus-in-urbe version at Holland Park in London will set you back a minimum £50 for main-stage shows (though its family opera in the park, Will Todd’s delightful Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, is a giveaway at under a tenner – if you can get a ticket).
