The flight between Australia and the UK is the ultimate long-haul, but being able to get to the other side of the world in under 24 hours means that Australian musicians pass through Britain in a steady stream these days. Now – during European tours – we have the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (under chief conductor Sir Andrew Davis) making BBC Proms and Edinburgh Festival debuts. In October we get the Australian Chamber Orchestra (led by longstanding artistic director Richard Tognetti) at the Queen Elizabeth Hall and Symphony Hall, Birmingham.
