Ha ha, scarcely has Sir Peter Maxwell Davies said the words ‘pointless dissonance’ than our conversation is halted by a fire alarm, shrieking as if to emphasise them. But it’s a false alarm: this isn’t going to be an occasion for the kind of incendiary remarks – on muzak or music education, on the laziness of conductors or the philistinism of politicians – the composer has made from time to time.
