Basca launches fees survey
Basca has launched its biannual survey of classical and jazz commission fees ‘with the purpose of providing composers, publishers and commissioners of new music with a practical point of reference for setting their own fees for commissions’. The survey is required by the Office of Fair Trading rather than the previous practice of recommending rates to members. Composers are asked to provide data for work completed in 2010 and 2011. A statement explains: ‘As before, it is to be filled in on a category by category basis – chamber orchestral, choral and so on – with a minimal amount of information required. You can complete surveys in different categories at different times, so 5 minutes of your time here and there is all that will be needed. Fill out the Chamber Orchestra survey today, then come back tomorrow and complete the Unaccompanied Choral survey! You can provide information for two commissions in each category. Please do try to support us in this endeavour – the more data we can collect, the more effective the analysis, and the more useful this will be in pitching the price for a commission.’ Survey available here: http://ow.ly/gAWCd
